Related reddits. I don't know whether you're speaking tongue-in-cheek, but that works by using ClickOnce, the technology discussed here. ClickOnce does not automatically install software, and is not malware, in any sense I've ever heard that word used. It is directly analogous to Java Web Start: if ClickOnce is installed, and you have a third-party-signed installer, then ClickOnce can immediately present that installer to the user. If the user then authorizes the install, your application will be installed in a per-user sandbox.
The only thing that this technology accomplishes is merging the download, launch, and UAC approve steps; that's it. I also find the hubbub about this being 'evil' somewhat bizarre.
Microsoft made ClickOnce a system-wide Firefox extension-which, by any stretch of the imagination, was the right thing to do. It turns out Firefox does not allow you to disable system-wide extensions, which is a bug with Firefox. Microsoft then fixed the problem by deploying a new version of the extension that was per-user with the.NET service pack. This made users complain that the plugin should have updated itself-which it can't, because Firefox doesn't allow updates of system-wide plugins, for the same reason it doesn't allow disabling them. EDIT: Tiny grammar fix.
All - Please help. Windows Update keeps reporting that Microsoft.NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2 Update is not installed. When I go to WindowsUpdate at.
Check for updates and it always says that the 'Software, Optional' update 'Microsoft.NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2 Update for Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP x86 (KB976569)'.is available for install. I select it.I install it.the page says the install is done and successful.I reboot.I return to WindowsUpdate.I check for updates again.and the Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2 is stil there. I have also tried downloading the actual update from. When I try to install the installer says it is already installed. The silly system tray icon saying 'updates are ready to be installed' is also ever-present, with the same dead effects. At logoff, the system also has the 'install updates and then shutdown' option ever-available and that too does not work. I am developing using Framework 3.5 and it seems fine.
How can all this be fixed? Please advise.
Mark Kamoski Windows Update Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2. Careed - I appreciate your nice reply. Unfortunately, I am still having trouble. Regarding this. Look at the Add and Remove Programs control panel app and see if Service Pack 2 is listed there. If it is, try reinstalling/repairing it and then check Windows Updates again.I did that and it still is in Windows Updates.
Furthermore, there really does not seem to be a fully fleshed-out 'reinstall/repair' built-in, when I click 'Change' in AddRemovePrograms for this item, it runs something but there is no dialog or other indication of exactly what it is doing- it just runs and the finishes. Regarding this. If it still present in Windows Updates uninstall from your computer, reboot, and then install from Windows Updates.when I try to uninstall Framework 2 Sp 2, the procesing is halted by a prompt saying. 'Microsoft.NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2 cannot be uninstalled because it will affect other applications that are installed. For more information, see I am stuck and that link send me to. It seems that I need to uninstall back to the Framework 2 if I want to continue the uninstall.
As such, uninstall seems impractical and will probably be a last resort. That is, I would rather live with the nag than (essentially) rebuild my machine. If you have more thoughts on the process, then please let me know. Mark Kamoski Framework 2 Sp 2 not working. Car - I appreciate the information. The link.has some instructions regarding a repair of Framework 2 Sp 2, but they did not work.
The link.has some instructions regarding how to uninstall Framework 2 and rebuild, which involves the usual RegEdit disclaimers, which means (in fine print) that the cure may be worse than the cold. Time for a small rant. As much as I love the Framework. I thought the issues of the Registry. A thing of the past.
Why these things don't over-install is another mystery. Each of these should be either wholly-idempotent or all-encompassing. Regardless, of all that I am, of course, continuing forward with the Framework and am keeping the current state of affairs. The.NET Framework is still, IMHO, far and away the best development platform- maybe I just need a change and should start writing in F# to take my mind onto new territory.:-) My prediction (and my hope) is that after some Security Tuesday patch party, or after my install of VisualStudio 2010, all this will 'self-heal'. If anyone has any help (other than 'rebuild your machine' please), then please do send it along as it would be very much appreciated. (All that being said, I am up-and-running and everything is building fine and deploying fine so maybe this is a case of the indicator utilities being funky?) Thank you. Mark Kamoski.
Mark, First of all, I understand where you're coming from as I just went through the same process through with the installation of.NET 4.0. In my case, though, the process kept telling me that I was still installing even after about two or three reboots. Still, after tinkering with the registry and purging some files, I was finally able to get it working so I could install it and everything else. As for your rant, unfortunately, as it has been pointed to us over and over again with regard to using the interoperability functionality from the Framework, Microsoft, too, has to live by this as well since they cannot write Windows overnight.
For the most part, Win32 is a huge investment as well as an enormous chunk of the code in each current Windows version and that won't change soon (and shouldn't because it will be really overwhelming then). As a result, the really fun features like the registry still exists and still has to be maintained, especially when installing applications.
Apart from that, though, I believe, at least from a development perspective, the.NET Framework, even with all of the strangeness associated with versions 3.0 and 3.5, is still leaps and bounds better at managing developer expectations when compared to Win32/COM. A few years ago, I went through something like this. I believe that it was a SP for one of the Framework, though I'm sure which one. Every time I tried to install, either through Microsoft Update and manually (I believe the machine was running Windows XP), it would fail.
Never affected anything I was developing, but it was very, very annoying. I don't remember exactly what happened, but I believe that it was something along the lines of your 'self-heal' wish: At some point, the right critical update fixed the problem. Never figured out what caused and, after it was fixed, didn't care to find out either. Anyway, if I come across anything, I will certainly pass your way.
Otherwise, May 11th isn't too far away. Lester K I am currently using this sequence found while searching for the same solution. It was explained the updates where released out of sequence so it must be first removed, kb974417 installed, and then kb976569 reinstalled. Lester - Did you have Framework 3 installed? Did you have to remove it before doing the steps that you noted above? Did you have Framework 3.5 installed?
Did you have to remove it before doing the steps that you noted above? Please advise. (I ask because in many of the articles that I have read concerning Framework fixes they recommed uninstall back to the version that you need to repair- so, I am wondering if you had to do that.) Thank you. Mark Kamoski.
Lester K I am currently using this sequence found while searching for the same solution. Lester - I really do appreciate your time taken to point this out. Unfortunately, I still have Windows Update reporting that the Framework 2 Sp 2 needs to be installed, and the Windows Updates System Tray icon says the same thing, and the windows log-off still says 'install updates and shutdown', so there it is. No big thing though- everything is debugging, compiling, packaging, and deploying OK- so, maybe it is just the pesky indicators themselves. I am moving on for now, after 12 reboots today, I have work to do.:-) (Still, it would be interesting to know if you rolled back from Framework 3 or not when you applied your fix steps, as I note above.) Thank you.
Mark Kamoski. All - In an attempt to fix the 'Windows Update keeps reporting that Microsoft.NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2 Update is not installed' issue on my machine, I uninstalled all versions and SPs of the all Frameworks. Note that I had installed everything EXCEPT Framework 4, because I cannot install it yet (for complicated reasons). Then I reinstalled them all, in order, rebooting after each, up to but NOT including Framework 4. Now the 'Windows Update keeps reporting that Microsoft.NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2 Update is not installed' issue is gone. Unfortunately, I now have a new issue. 'Windows Update keeps reporting that Microsoft.NET Framework 3.0 Service Pack 2 Update is not installed'.and so the saga continues.
If you have any advice, then please let me know. (I am leaving this thread as 'Not Resolved' for now.) Thank you. Mark Kamoski. Try doing one thing if you have installed any update Go to 'folder options' in CP, in View tab check 'Show hidden files' & uncheck 'hide protected OS files.' All - This is an update to the Windows Update situation that I discussed above.
The situation has changed slightly in that it has actually become a bit worse that before because there are now 3 updates that Windows Update cannot install. Currently, these are the 3 updates that Windows XP and Windows Update cannot seem to install. Microsoft.NET Framework 3.5 SP1 and.NET Framework 2.0 SP2 Update for Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP x86 (KB982524) - Microsoft.NET Framework 3.5 SP1 Update for Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP x86 (KB982168) - Microsoft.NET Framework 3.0 Service Pack 2 Update for Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP x86 (KB976570).and no matter what I do these keep showing up as needing to be installed in Windows Update. If you have any hints, then please send them along. Mark Kamoski.
MGBA Try doing one thing if you have installed any update Go to 'folder options' in CP, in View tab check 'Show hidden files' & uncheck 'hide protected OS files.' Now go to 'C' drive- in your 'Windows' folder you'll find 'Software Distribution' folder just delete all contents from that(send then to recycle bin means do not delete them permanently now) now check for updates again missed one thing just go to Services in CP & stop Windows Updates otherwise it won't let you delete contents of 'Software Distribution' MGBA - This is a follow-up to your post above. I tried your advice but it did not help. I deleted the 'Software Distribution' folder, as noted above and it did change the procesing a little because the updates were re-downloaded.
Here is a complete description of what happened. This is the what Microsoft Update reported after a reboot, after running a custom-check-for-updates, before the installation.

If you, or anyone, has any more advice, then please do send it along. Mark Kamoski. Hello, FOA sorry for late reply as I was out of station, Now what you should do is download this tool and check for your.net framework installed this too will tell which framework is installed if your required framework is already installed & even then Windows keep telling about that updated then look for option to hide that update(this feature is there in Vista & 7 but I'm not sure about Xp as I've never used in that & I can't even check it now this must be there look around here there) if it is there then Windows will no more show only about that update. And if you're having problem in installing updates then do one this check for Updates in your Windows & look for their name & check for KBxxxxx something and then go to & there install the activeX & search for that KBxxxxx update there, from there you can download that Update manually & install it on your system. Mkamoski As such, it appears that Microsoft Update is not working on my Windows XP Pro machine. What do you mean by this are you able to install other Updates or are you getting errors for.net frameworks only BTW which SP are you using in your Xp check your Xp SP end of life from may be because of this you are not able to install Updates(just guess) Hope this will help you.:). All - FWIW, this is an update.
As of 10:00 AM, reboot, run Microsoft Update, view results. Mark Kamoski. MGBA - I appreciate your reply. Here is my response to your input. Regarding this. what you should do is download this tool.NET VERSION DETECTOR and check for your.net framework installed.I did that and.NET VERSION DETECTOR reports the following.NET FW 1.0.NET FW 1.1 SP 1.NET FW 2.0 SP 2.NET FW 3.0.NET FW 3.5 SP 1.NET FW 4.0 Client.NET FW 4.0 Full.but Microsoft Update is still reporting that I need to install the following. Microsoft.NET Framework 3.5 SP1 and.NET Framework 2.0 SP2 Update for Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP x86 (KB982524) Microsoft.NET Framework 3.5 SP1 Update for Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP x86 (KB982168) Microsoft.NET Framework 3.0 Service Pack 2 Update for Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP x86 (KB976570).so my guess is that the.NET VERSION DETECTOR is wrong, or Microsoft Update is wrong, etc.
Regarding this. are you able to install other Updates or are you getting errors for.net frameworks?well, that is a tricky question and really the crux of the matter, right? As noted above, it seems that the tool (Microsoft Update) that is used to check for 'health' may, in fact, itself be 'sick'. That is precisely why this is such a serious matter. As a result the 'reports' from the tool may not be trustworthy.
That said, it APPEARS that the trouble is with (KB982524) and (KB982168) and (KB976570) only, and other things are getting update propely, but I can only guess at this point, which is not ideal. If you have any more suggestions, then please send them along. Mark Kamoski.
Careed Have you tried downloading each of these and installing them one at a time, with a reboot in between? Try this order: KB976570, KB982168, KB982524.
If KB982168 doesn't work by itself, then do KB982524 before KB982168. Careed - I appreciate your reply and followed your recommendations. In short, your proposed fix did not work and the problem still exists- regardless, your effort is commendable. Here are the detailed results.
As of 09:51 AM, I rebooted. As of 10:01 AM, I launched KB976570, it ran, and it reported 'None of the products that are addressed by this software update are installed on this computer. Click Cancel to exit setup'.
As of 10:02 AM, I launched KB982168, it ran, and it reported 'The software update has been installed successfully'. As of 10:11 AM, I rebooted. As of 10:23 AM, I launched KB982524, 'The software update has been installed successfully'. As of 10:41 AM, I rebooted.
As of 10:47 AM, I ran Microsoft Update and it reported the following. Microsoft.NET Framework 3.5 SP1 and.NET Framework 2.0 SP2 Update for Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP x86 (KB982524) Microsoft.NET Framework 3.5 SP1 Update for Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP x86 (KB982168) Microsoft.NET Framework 3.0 Service Pack 2 Update for Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP x86 (KB976570).so, it appears to me, that as of 10:54 AM the 'issue' still persists on my machine.
If there is more help out there, then please post it here. Mark Kamoski. I seem to be experiencing the same issue.
Three updates always appear. Microsoft.NET Framework 3.5 SP1 and.NET Framework 2.0 SP2 Update for Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP x86 (KB982524) - Microsoft.NET Framework 3.5 SP1 Update for Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP x86 (KB982168) - Microsoft.NET Framework 3.0 Service Pack 2 Update for Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP x86 (KB976570) When I check to install the first two 3.5 udpates, the installation appears to goes through sucessfully, but a subsequent check for updates shows these same two items over again. When I attempt to install the third update the installation fails. A manual download and installation of KB976570 reports that. 'None of the products that are addressed by this software update are installed on this computer. Click Cancel to exit setup.' This does not seem true and.NET Version Detector reports the following Installed.NET Frameworks NET FW 1.1 SP 1 NET FW 2.0 SP 2 NET FW 3.0 SP 2 NET FW 3.5 SP 1 NET FW 4.0 Client NET FW 4.0 Full I do not have Visual Studio installed, although I did once previously, and as you can see, I do have.NET framework 4.
I also attempted to solve the issue, to no avail, by running a dot net cleanup utility and re-installing the frameworks. Any advice or suggestions is greatly appreciated. For others who don't use forums a lot: CP means ' control panel'. It took me a while to figure out what the heck that meant. For a while I thought it meant 'computer properties' This process of deleting files in C: windows softwaredistribution (after turning off auto updates) worked for me I made a copy of the folder before deleting it (as an extra safety measure) However, my computer isn't showing any updates at all now, even though I turned 'auto updates back on. I also restarted the computer.
The log inside 'softwareDistribution' folder would not delete, so I left it there. Many of the deleted folders did replace themselves automatically after reboot, but I'm still a little worried about not getting ANY UPDATE notices. I will try to update manually and see what happens after that. If readers follow posts to the end, the person who posted the original question said that 'upgrading to.net framework 4 (+ something else I don't recall like media studio 10 or something). Find the very last post by the original person who asked question for that. Also, I found a post by PA BEAR on another forum about this same issue. If I have any problems I will follow the advise he listed there.

He lists links to some MICROSOFT offical sites for solving net framework probllems. The reply by PA BEAR is only a couple of posts down on the page address listed above. Good luck to all. Aparently a lot of us who still need to use XP for something are having this problem. I'm an accountant and I need to run a lot of programs that clients have, therefore I have to keep a lot of computers around with various operating systems.
